History & Architecture
13 dynasties, one continuous timeline
Before the Qin Dynasty, Xi'an was already the heart of Guanzhong civilization. In 221 BC Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified China here and built his mausoleum guarded by the Terracotta Army. Under the Han Dynasty, Chang'an became the eastern anchor of the Silk Road, drawing merchants, monks, and diplomats from Persia and Central Asia.
The Tang Dynasty (618โ907) was Chang'an's golden age โ briefly the largest city on earth, with over a million residents, grand palaces, and flourishing Buddhism. After the Ming Dynasty rebuilt the city with the massive brick wall that still encircles the old town, Xi'an settled into its role as a cradle of Chinese civilization, one that today links inland China to Eurasian trade once again.
Ming City Wall & Bell-Drum Towers
China's best-preserved complete city fortification โ 13.7 km of 12-metre brick ramparts. At the historic centre, the symmetrical Bell and Drum Towers once kept time for the whole city.
Tang Buddhist Pagodas
Simple, solid brick towers built to shelter Silk Road scriptures. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda and its slender sibling, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, are the finest surviving examples.
Sino-Islamic Courtyards
The Great Mosque hides deep in the Muslim Quarter โ Chinese courtyard layouts and upturned-eave wooden halls carrying Islamic geometric carving, with no domes or minarets in sight.
Underground Qin Mausoleum

Where to go and what to see in each district
Xi'an's essential sights cluster into a handful of distinct zones โ the walled old city, the Tang-heritage new district to the south, the Muslim Quarter's back lanes, and the Terracotta Army complex out toward Lishan. Most visitors can cover the old town on foot and reach everything else by metro or a short taxi ride.
The historic heart within the Ming wall โ Bell Tower, Drum Tower, the full circuit of city ramparts, and the Muslim Quarter's food-stall alleys all within walking distance of each other. Best explored as a full day, combining daytime architecture with an evening food crawl.
South of the old town, Qujiang unifies Tang-style architecture with Xi'an's grandest museum and Buddhist heritage. Visit in the late afternoon to carry through into the evening fountain and lantern shows.
Duck off the main food street and into the Great Mosque's quiet multi-courtyard complex, then keep wandering the residential back alleys beyond it โ fewer crowds, more authentic halal snacks, and a completely different pace than the main thoroughfare.
The vast foundation ruins of the Tang Dynasty's grandest imperial palace. Open grounds and miniature models reveal just how enormous ancient Chang'an's royal court once was โ a peaceful, uncrowded sunset walk.
About an hour east of downtown โ the single most famous archaeological site in China, alongside the Tang imperial hot spring palace at its foot. Allocate at least half a day, and reserve tickets in advance.

Metro, tourist buses, and when to just walk
Xi'an's metro network covers downtown relics, Qujiang District, and โ via Line 9 โ the Terracotta Army. English signage is available throughout. The old city wall, Muslim Quarter, and Bell Tower zones are best explored on foot.
